What made you make the move to Centrica Energy?

I got involved in energy through my industrial placement year, working on oil and gas pipelines. During my subsequent MSc in Energy Systems, I discovered commodity trading as a way to be involved in this industry whilst retaining a global, system-wide view of the sector. Centrica Energy’s graduate scheme has given me the opportunity to try different aspects of energy trading - both to find where my skillset brings the most value and also what I enjoy the most.

 

Career after the Graduate Programme: 

After completing the graduate programme, I returned to London as a Commodity Trading Analyst in the Physical Gas Optimisation team. My role spans a range of products, with a focus on gas and power origination deals, including hydrogen products. No two days look the same: one moment I might be writing code to analyse and optimise markets or products, the next working alongside our legal team to draft contract documents or collaborating with traders to shape strategies. It’s an exciting desk to be on, blending technical problem solving with commercial decision making.

What is your biggest learnings during the Graduate Programme?

Looking back, my learnings fall into two broad categories. On the technical side, I learned about the complex world of commodity trading: how markets operate, how to model and forecast within the real-world constraints, and how to blend the theory and the reality of the industry. On the personal side, the programme taught me about the importance of collaboration. Working across teams in different geographies improved my communication skills and showed the value of building strong relationships.
