The South-West has the lowest level of power generation in the UK and imports most of its power from south Wales and the Midlands. As some power transmitted on overhead lines is lost in transmission, it is more beneficial to have a power station in an area where the power is needed.
Langage will supply over one million homes and negates the need for power to be brought in from elsewhere, reducing the cost of transporting electricity for the region.
Langage was originally given consent in November 2000 following a full planning application process. The project was acquired by Centrica Langage Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Centrica Energy, in August 2004.
