Glens of Foudland

Glens of Foudland

Glens of Foudland is an onshore wind farm, 7.5km east of Huntly in Aberdeenshire.

Centrica acquired this 26MW onshore wind farm from Renewable Energy Systems (RES) in October 2004. In 2009, Centrica announced the sale of a 50% equity stake in the Glens of Foudland and Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farms to the US based investment management company, TCW.

The 20-turbine wind farm generated its first commissioning power in May 2005. It has an operational life of 25 years, with RES operating and maintaining the site on Centrica's behalf for the initial five years.

The turbines that harness the natural power of the wind to generate electricity are 1.3MW machines supplied by Bonus of Denmark. Each turbine tower is 47m high with a rotor diameter of 62m, giving a total height to the blade tip of 78m. The towers, which are made of steel, are bolted onto concrete foundations and the blades are made from reinforced glassfibre.

The wind farm is located in an area that benefits from high wind speeds. This results in a load factor higher than for a typical onshore wind farm. It will supply enough pollution-free electricity to meet the annual needs of more than 13,000 homes, equivalent to more than double the annual consumption of all the houses in Huntly, Turriff and Inverurie or more than 20% of all households in Aberdeenshire. There will be no emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, from power generation.

All power generated by the wind farm is supplied to Centrica’s British Gas operations.
