Barrow Offshore Wind

Barrow Offshore

Barrow Offshore Wind is a 90MW wind farm located 7km south-west of Walney Island in the East Irish Sea near Barrow-in-Furness.

It comprises 30 wind turbines, each capable of producing 3MW of electricity, delivering power to the existing grid system at Heysham via buried subsea and onshore cables.

Construction work was completed in June 2006 and the wind farm was officially opened in September 2006.

Anticipated annual production is 305 GWh, which is capable of supplying around 65,000 homes – equivalent to more than double the annual consumption of all the houses in Barrow-in-Furness or more than 30% of all households in Cumbria.

Vestas-KBR is contracted to operate and maintain the wind farm for an initial period of five years. British Gas will take all of the electricity produced by the wind farm under a long-term power purchase agreement.

Barrow Offshore Wind, Lynn and Inner Dowsing are all part of the Government's Round 1 developments. These were designed to enable developers to gain vital experience in the offshore environment.

Barrow Offshore Wind (BOW) is a 50/50 joint venture between Centrica and Danish energy group DONG Energy. Initial plans for BOW were promoted by Warwick Energy Limited and full consent was granted for the development in 2003, prior to BOW’s acquisition by Centrica and DONG.
